Who we are

The National Ice Hockey Officials Association is an association of ice hockey officials. It grew out of independent officials associations formed in the 1930s, and was formally organized in 1955 by officials, for the betterment of ice hockey officials and the game of ice hockey.

Our purpose is to promote the welfare of the game, its players and officials, to maintain the highest standards of officiating, and to encourage the spirit of fair play and sportsmanship.

NIHOA is national in scope and is made up of local chapters. Officials join through their chapter, which trains and tests its members and meets through the season to discuss the rules, their interpretation and officiating technique.
